A reinforced polyethylene pipe and method of making the same is disclosed comprised of a segment of wire helically wound around a length of polyethylene pipe. The wire is preferably heated to a degree sufficient to melt the polyethylene pipe contacted by the wire. By controlling the temperature and tension of the wire, the wire can be embedded a desired distance in a wall of the length of polyethylene pipe. In addition, after winding the heated wire on the pipe, by extruding the pipe, the wire can be substantially enclosed within the wall of the pipe. Preferably, the ends of the wire are spot welded to an adjacent wrap to keep the wire from becoming unraveled.
