A molded plastics material key having a handle, a shank and a bit and including a shank reinforced to withstand torque applied through the head when resistance to turning is encountered after the key is inserted into a lock. The reinforcement can include integrally molded thickening throughout the length of the shank and extending at least partially onto the handle, reinforcement embedded at least partially within the key, a metallic reinforcing insert having an extension from the handle into the shank, two reinforcing inserts, or fibrous reinforcement material. A key and holder combination is also provided.
