This invention relates to a novel reinforced carpet tile mat base and modular carpet framing system. More particu- larly, the invention relates to a novel modular carpet tile mat construction which is specifically adapted to hold carpet tiles in a fixed position so that they may be used in combination as a floor mat or a covering for part of a floor area, as a self- contained floor covering. The invention comprises carpet tiles, a mat base, and a mat frame. The mat base comprises: (a) a reinforcing layer, comprising woven or spun-bonded polyester, nylon or polypropylene fibres; (b) a plastic binder enveloping and completely immersing the reinforcing layer, thus binding the fibres of the reinforcing layer together; and (c) a first and second layer of resilient expanded foamed polymer or rubber distinct from the plastic binder (b) and adhered to a first and a second opposing side, respectively, of the plastic-immersed reinforcing layer. The mat frame holds the mat base and carpet tiles in compression. The mat frame having bevelled edges to facilitate the movement of wheeled traffic on and off the carpet tile mat. A feature of the invention is that the immersion of the reinforcement layer in a polymer plastic binder affords dimensional stability to the mat base against stretch and trap- ezoidal distortion as well as rigidity to receive compressive forces. Another feature of the invention is that it can be installed without adhesives between the carpet tiles and the mat base or the mat frame.
