A process for the rejuvenative catalytic oxidation of offensive substances, such as cyanides, sulfides, sulfites, thiosulfates, mercaptans, disulfides, ammonia and mixtures thereof, contained in waste water is provided. The process comprises adding to the waste water a low concentration of a metal compound and then passing the treated waste water along with a source of oxygen over an adsorbent material to catalytically oxidize the offensive substances contained in the waste water. The process reduces the catalytic impact of the loss of metal from the adsorbent material due to leaching and allows the catalyst to be rejuvenated and allows recovery from process upsets in the treating system without unit shutdown and catalyst replacement. An example of the catalytic support is activated carbon and an example of the metal is copper.
L'invention concerne un procédé pour l'oxydation catalytique regénératrice de substances nuisibles, tels que des cyanures, sulfures, sulfites, thiosulfates, mercaptans, bisulphides, gaz ammoniac et mélanges de ces derniers, contenus dans les eaux usées. Le procédé consiste à ajouter aux eaux usées une faible concentration d'un composé métallique puis à faire passer les eaux usées ainsi traitées, en même temps qu'une source d'oxygène, sur un matériau adsorbant pour oxyder, de manière catalytique, les substances nuisibles contenues dans les eaux usées. Le procédé réduit l'impact catalytique de la perte de métal du matériau adsorbant due au lessivage. Il permet, en outre, de regénérer le catalyseur et de rétablir les perturbations du système de traitement sans devoir fermer l'installation ni remplacer le catalyseur. Le charbon activé peut constituer un support catalytique, par exemple, et le métal peut être du cuivre.
