The consistency of a medium consistency (e.g. about 6-18 percent) paper pulp (e.g. Kraft pulp) may be accurately determined by determining the pipe line friction drop. The pulp is deaerated with a fluidizing pump, and pumped into a conduit. A pair of spaced pressure taps are provided in the conduit, and they are operatively connected to a differential pressure transmitter, such as one having a piezoresistive sensor. The transmitter may be calibrated to correspond to a desired consistency, or the temperature and flow rate of the pulp may be measured and from this, utilizing the Bodenheimer equation, the consistency may be calculated. The method and apparatus are much more effective in determining consistency than are conventional optical and mechanical techniques, for medium consistency pulp.
