A relief valve for the hydraulic fuse minimizes the chance of a device such as a hydraulically powered lift de- vice from collapsing upon a break in a hydraulic input line to a cylinder powering the lift. The relief valve com- prises a valve seat biased in a first direction by a rela- tively heavy spring and a hydraulic fuse biased away from the valve seat by a relatively light, second spring. Upon a break occurring in the hydraulic input line, back pres- sure urges the fuse to seat against the valve seat, thus closing the valve. Upon applying additional hydraulic pressure in the direction of the fuse, the valve seat dis- engages from the fuse, allowing hydraulic fluid to flow through the relief valve and thus allowing a piston in the hydraulic cylinder to retract so as to permit lowering of the lift device.
