ABSTRACT A variable reluctance electric motor system has an even number of phases greater than two, and a power converter circuit including a main thyristor in series with each main winding of the motor connected across one or more D.V. sources, so that the current in each main winding is independent of that in other main windings. The windings taken in order of conduction are connected alternatively to positive and negative source terminals, and are connected to a commutating circuit so that commutation of a main thyristor leaves the commutating capacity or capacitors charged with the correct polarity and adequate voltage for the commutation of the next main thyristor in the conducting sequence.
