An apparatus and method for treating long-lived radioisotopes and transmuting them into short-lived radioisotopes through applied nuclear physics. Nuclear reactions, specifically of the (.gamma., n) type, also known as photodisintegration, are utilized to accomplish this transmutation from a radioisotope of given atomic mass to that of lower atomic mass. A radioactive element (1) is irradiated by high-energy photons, preferably in the form of gamma rays. The gamma rays are absorbed by the nucleus of the radioactive element placing it in an excited state. Upon relaxation from the excited state, the nucleus ejects a neutron, thereby transmuting the element to an isotope of lower atomic mass and shorter half-life.

L'invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé qui permettent de traiter les radio-isotopes à période longue et de les transmuter en radio-isotopes à période courte par la physique nucléaire appliquée. On utilise des réactions nucléaires, notamment de type (.gamma., n), également connues sous le nom de photodésintégration, pour accomplir cette transmutation depuis un radio-isotope d'une masse atomique donnée à un radio-isotope de masse atomique inférieure. Un élément radioactif (1) est irradié par des photons de haute énergie, de préférence sous forme de rayons gamma. Ceux-ci sont absorbés par le noyau de l'élément radioactif, ce qui le fait passer à l'état excité. Après relaxation depuis ledit état excité, le noyau éjecte un neutron, ce qui transmute l'élément en isotope de masse atomique inférieure et de période radioactive plus courte.
