A video editing system learns the transport characteristics of a source recording medium in a video source deck by instructing a user to provide position information and to respond to commands by manually commanding the video source deck to perform a selected function. The video editing system uses the learned transportcharacteristics to control the movement of the source recording medium by transmitting commands to the video source deck at calculated times. The user inputs data into the video editing system to create an index of segments of data on the source recording medium. The user then selects the order of the segments that are to berecorded onto a destination recording medium in a video receiver. Using the transport characteristics, the video editing system commands the video source deck to move the source recording medium to the beginning of each of the selected segments and to play each such segment. The video receiver is commanded to record each such segment.
