A remote controller for remotely controlling the operation of certain equipment, such as gymnasium equipment, relies upon a line-of-sight light- activated controller for controlling the repositioning of various types of equipment. The controler system, comprising a hand-held, code-emitting light generator, and a light receiver located upon or adjacent the respective piece ofequipment, enables the precise control of an electric positioning motor, in deploying or retracting an equipment element, possibly selected from a plurality of similarly equipped pieces of equipment located in the vicinity. Thecontroller ensures safe operation of the selected equipment element, without thepossibility of actuating non-elected pieces of other equipment, or of over- running position limit switches, and with the capability of achieving safe intermediate stopping while travelling in either direction, and of reversal of the direction of travel, etc. The control process requires ongoing operation of the controller during motion of the equipment, with the built-in safety characteristics of a dead-man control.
