A system for accommodating convenient and efficient payment at full service, gas service stations is disclosed. The system recognizes the existing computerization at service stations and provides modifications at the pumps which coordinate with portable hand held transceivers. These portable hand held transceivers include security circuitry to encode signals to the transceivers provided at the pumps and results in a secure system where confidential information, such as a PIN number can be entered. This system uses the existing system between the pumps and in store processors such that modifications to the in store processor are reduced such that retrofit of existing systems is more cost effective.
