A radio telephone system operable in conjunction with a telephone switching office includes a subscriber unit and a call routing system. The subscriber unit includes a transceiver, antenna, power plug, and handset, and, optionally, a battery pack. The subscriber unit, in one embodiment, has a plurality of dedicated calling buttons that may be externally programmed and that, when operated, initiate communication to one of three respective programmed telephone numbers. The telephone numbers corresponding to each of the dedicated calling buttons is programmable over the air using a remote-control programming method. A mobile identification number and a system identification number of the subscriber unit are also programmable over the air using the remote-control programming method so as to remotely activate the telephone system.
