A communication apparatus 10 for allowing a first remote asset 11 to communicate with wayside device 15, 18, a second remote asset 21, 23, a remote facility 87 and a central operations facility 17, the apparatus 10 comprising a local area network module 30 for sending and receiving a communication over a short range using a local area network, a wide area network module 32 for sending and receiving a communication over a long range using a wide area network, a control module 34 to control communications sent and received over at least one of said local area network and said wide area network, and a coordinate module 36 to coordinate a communication sent and received from a sensor 12, 13, 14 wherein the apparatus 10 passes the communication between the first remote asset and at least one of the wayside device 15, 18, the second remote asset 21, 23, the remote facility 87, and the central facility 17.
