ABSTRACT A compensator for the steering system of a vehicle to pre- vent movement of a steerable member away from a preselected center position until a steering force exceeds a predeter- mined value. The compensator is connected between the vehicle frame and the steering system and includes a fluid system providing resistance opposing away from center move- ment. The level of resistance is controllably variable and controls are provided for selectively varying the resistance level while the vehicle is in operation. The compensator may include a trimming device for changing the center posi- tion of the steerable member while the vehicle is in opera- tion.
