A remote control system 10 and method for the remote control operation of a locomotive in the performance of a car-kicking sequence Step 41 comprising a control unit 11, a remote control unit 14 and a processor 24 in communication with the locomotive onboard operating system 15. An operator interface 16 of the operator control unit 14 includes an input mechanism for inputting a command associated with at least one predetermined car-kicking sequence. The operator control unit 11 generates a signal 21 to the onboard operator's system 15 indicative of the instruction to perform the ear-kicking sequence Step 34. The processor 24 is able to access a set of stored instructions 26 for performing the car-kicking sequence Step 34.
