A bar screen system for fluid channels has individually removeable bars (26). The bars are connected to at least two screenfield bar holders (33, 35). Each holder has a plurality of slots (32) in which the bars insert. A removeably mounted screenfield bar retainer (41) at each holder attaches the bars. The retainers have teeth (43) that wedge the bars between them.
