Abstract A solid, cylindrical, subcutaneous implant for improving the rate of weight gain of ruminant animals which comprises (a) a biocompatible inert core having a diameter of from 2 to 10 mm. and (b) a biocompatible coating having a thickness of from 0.2 to 1 mm., the composition of said coating comprising from 5 to 40 percent by weight of estradiol and from 95 to 60 percent by weight of a dimethylpolysiloxane rubber, the implant having been produced by coating a continuous rod of the inert core material with a mixture of the estradiol, uncured rubber and curing agent in a continuous process using a cross head die, followed by curing the coating and thereafter cutting the continuous coated rod into required lengths within the range of from 0.5 to 6 cm.
