S P E C I F I C A T I O N TITLE: REMOVABLE HEAD ROTARY TOOL FOR FOOD PROCESSORS INVENTORS: JAMES E. WILLIAMS, and EDWARD R. KOZLOWSKI ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A removable head rotary tool is provided for use in food processors. The rotary tool has an elongated hub or shank with an upper coupling portion and a lower drive coupling portion, adapted to be coupled to and rotated by a motor drive. The rotary tool includes a tool head having a horizontal disc-like member with cutting means for processing food items which are fed through a feed tube to the rotary tool in a bowl. The processed food is directed through the cutting means into the bowl. The horizontal disc-like tool head is detachably mounted on the upper head coupling portion of the elongated hub. The horizontal disc- like member of the tool head has a receptacle adapted to receive the upper coupling portion of the hub. This upper coupling portion has a flange-like configuration with spaced, projecting, peripheral teeth, and the receptacle has a plurality of spaced, lip retainers which are adapted to receive and retain such teeth when the upper end of the elongated hub is inserted in an axial direction and then rotated about the axis of the tool for changing its horizontal angular orientation in the receptacle. The teeth and lip retainers have corresponding matching sizes which are arranged so that the flange-like member properly fits into the receptacle in only one position, thus preventing incorrect insertion of the hub into the receptacle of the tool head. A spring-loaded retactable rod is adapted to fit into an aligned locking recess in the receptacle. This retractable locking rod and its associated opening are offset from the axis of rotation of the tool for preventing removal of -1- the hub from the receptacle unless the rod is manually retracted by a manual release button. In addition, during manufacture, the receptacles in various tool heads may be provided with different size shims mounted between the receptacle and the lower surface of the removable head for producing slicing tool heads having different slicing thicknesses. By providing a variety of disc-like tool heads having different cutting structures for performing different food processing functions, a variety of food processing operations may be performed conveniently by changing the tool heads, without requiring a separate hub for each rotary tool. The advantage of this detachable tool head is the convenience provided by the flat disc-like tool heads which can be easily stored. Accordingly, one elongated hub can be used with several different slicing or food processing tool heads; for example, such as for producing thin, medium or thick slices, or for grating or rasping food items or for making julienne or French fry slices, and the various disc-like tool heads can be stored more conveniently in less space than the prior art tools in which an elongated hub is included with each tool. -2-
