ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for removing hydrogen sulfide present in an oxygen containing gas stream comprising: a) detecting and measuring the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the gas; b) adding ammonia to the gas in an amount effective for the removal of the hydrogen sulfide from said gas without the concomitant formation of solid ammonium polysulfide; and c) passing the ammonia containing gas through a bed of activated carbon.
