Removal of substantially all the H2S contained in a sour gas or a geothermal stream is accomplished with an aqueous solution containing ferric chelate and a water soluble anionic polymer containing sulfonic acid groups, carboxyl groups or mixtures thereof as a negative catalyst. The ferric chelate is reduced to ferrous chelate during this process. The resulting ferrous chelate solution is separated from the entrained solids and regenerated back to ferric chelate by an oxygen containing gas stream. The polymeric catalysts of the invention inhibit the oxidation and loss of chelant at 0.005 to 0.4 parts per part of iron concentrations.
