A process for removing dissolved silicon-containing species from an aqueous solution by treating the solution with an effective amount of a partially dehydrated trivalent metal hydroxide adsorbent. Preferably, the adsorbent is ferric oxyhydroxide. The process is of particular use in removing silicon- containing species from alkaline chloride and/or chlorate containing solutions and from pulp mill alkaline liquors.
