A process for the purification of a fluid stream containing a sulphur contaminant, such as hydrogen sulphide, and mercury, phosphine, stibine, and/or arsenic compounds as a second contaminant wherein said fluid stream is passed through a bed of a particulate absorbent containing a sulphide of a variable valency metal, especially copper, that is more electropositive than mercury, to remove said second contaminant and then the sulphur contaminant is removed from at lesast part of the effluent from that bed by passing that part of the effluent through a bed of a particulate sulphur absorbent comprising a compound selected from oxides, hydroxydes, carbonates and basic carbonates of said variable valency metal. The removal of the sulphur contaminant converts said variable valency metal compound to the corresponding sulphide. The resulting bed of variable valency metal sulphide is subsequently used for the removal of the second contaminant.

L'invention concerne un procédé de purification d'un courant fluide contenant un contaminant sulfuré, tel que du sulfure d'hydrogène, et d'autres contaminants, à savoir du mercure, de la phosphine, de la stibine et/ou des composés d'arsenic. Dans ledit procédé, ledit courant fluide passe à travers un lit constitué d'un matériau absorbant particulaire contenant un sulfure d'un métal de valence variable, en particulier du cuivre, celui-ci étant plus électropositif que le mercure, de sorte à extraire le ou les contaminants non sulfurés. Le contaminant sulfuré est ensuite extrait d'au moins une partie du courant passant à travers ledit lit, cette partie du courant étant passée à travers un lit constitué d'un absorbant sulfuré particulaire comprenant un composé choisi parmi des oxydes, des hydroxydes, des carbonates et des carbonates basiques dudit métal à valence variable. L'extraction du contaminant sulfuré convertit ledit composé métal de valence variable en sulfure correspondant. Le lit de sulfure de métal à valence variable ainsi obtenu est ensuite utilisé pour extraire le ou les contaminants non sulfurés.
