ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Contaminants such as suspended inorganic solids and many dissolved organic materials in low concentration and emulsified oils, are removed from water by addition to the water of a small but effective amount of a polymer emulsion such as SBR latex, and agitation. The contaminants rapidly settle with the agglomerated particles from the latex to give a solid residue and clear, substantially clean supernatant water which can be readily removed. The settling process may be accelerated by addition of a latex coagulant, such as calcium, magnesium, aluminum ions or polyionic polymers. Sinking or floating agents may be used prior to coagulation, to ensure sinking or floating, as desired, of separated solids.
