Liquid 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane containing contaminating unsaturated carbon compounds is treated with chlorine and ultraviolet light to convert the unsaturated contaminants to photochlorination products. The photo- chlorination products are thereafter separated from 1,1- dichloro-1-fluoroethane, such as by distillation. The process is particularly useful in separating vinylidene chloride from 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane.
