A method of removing water and/or methanol from fluid mixtures uses vapor permeation or pervaporation of the water or methanol from the mixture through a membrane having an amorphous perfluoropolymer selectively permeable layer. The novel process can be applied in such exemplary embodiments as (a) removing water or methanol from mixtures of compounds that have relative volatility of about 1-1.1 or that form azeotropic mixtures with water or methanol, (b) the dehydration of hydrocarbon oil such as hydraulic fluid to concentrations of water less than about 50 ppm, (c) removing water and methanol byproducts of reversible chemical reactions thereby shifting equilibrium to favor high conversion of reactants to desirable products, (d) drying ethanol to less than 0.5 wt. % water as can be used in fuel for internal combustion engines, and (e) controlling the water content to optimum concentration in enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions carried out in organic media.
Cette invention porte sur un procédé d'élimination d'eau et/ou de méthanol à partir de mélanges fluides qui utilise la perméabilité de la vapeur ou la pervaporation de l'eau ou du méthanol à partir du mélange à travers une membrane ayant une couche à perméabilité sélective de perfluoropolymère amorphe. Le nouveau procédé peut être appliqué dans des modes de réalisation à titre d'exemples tels que (a) l'élimination de l'eau ou du méthanol à partir de mélanges de composés qui ont une volatilité relative d'environ 1-1,1 ou qui forment des mélanges azéotropes avec l'eau ou le méthanol, (b) la déshydratation d'huile hydrocarbonée telle qu'un fluide hydraulique à des concentrations d'eau inférieures à environ 50 ppm, (c) l'élimination de l'eau et du méthanol comme sous-produits de réactions chimiques réversibles, déplaçant par là l'équilibre pour favoriser une conversion élevée de réactifs en produits désirés, (d) le séchage de l'éthanol à moins de 0,5 % en poids d'eau comme pouvant être utilisé dans le carburant pour des moteurs à combustion interne, et (e) la régulation de la teneur en eau à une concentration optimale dans des réactions chimiques catalysées par des enzymes effectuées dans des milieux organiques.
