TITLE REMOVING NEUTRON-ABSORBING FISSION PRODUCTS FROM URANIUM-BASED FUELS INVENTORS Bradley J.F. Palmer Christopher H. Knight ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Nuclear fuel comprising uranium and containing neutron- absorbing fission products due to irradiation, can be processed to remove such fission products by contacting the fuel in a comminuted form with a weak acid or a solution of a weak acid selected to preferentially dissolve these fission products, and separating the acid solution from the comminuted fuel. This treated fuel having reduced levels of neutron-absorbers can be reconstituted and recycled to yield higher burn-up of fissionable components. This treatment is particularly suitable for recycling irradiated enriched fuel in a tandem fuel cycle.
