ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a method of repairing a bottom plate of an ingot mould containing a cavity, comprising locating an exothermic composition in the cavity and igniting the composition to initiate an exothermic reaction with the formation of a molten slag, and including the step of locating an enclosure to surround the cavity at least during the exothermic reaction, thereby to confine fume from the reaction to a zone defined by the enclosure.
