A method for imparting soil resistance to unscoured carpets, and a carpet treated in accordance with the method, are provided. In accordance with the method, a substrate comprising unscoured carpet fibers is treated with the ammonium salt of a polycarboxylic acid, such as an ammonium salt of a hydrolyzed styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer. The treated substrate is found to have enhanced water and oil repellency in both heat cured and room temperature drying conditions.

Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé visant à communiquer une certaine résistance aux salissures à des moquettes non lavées à fond, ainsi qu'à une moquette traitée selon ledit procédé. Conformément à ce procédé, on traite une sous-couche portant des fibres de moquette non lavées à fond avec un sel d'ammonium d'un acide carboxylique, tel qu'un sel d'ammonium d'un copolymère hydrolysé de styrène et d'anhydride malique. La sous-couche ainsi traitée présente des caractéristiques améliorées d'hydrophobie et d'oléophobie à la fois dans des conditions de traitement à chaud ou de séchage à température ambiante.
