ABSTRACT In this invention, the component of a chuck jaw that makes contact with the material to be held, is a throw-away type of carbide insert. The insert is secured to the chuck jaw with a screw and accurately located in a recess of the jaw. The corner of the insert digs into the workpiece material resulting in a strong gripthat prevents slippage. The insert can be indexed into 4 positions. This applicat- ion can be used for inner-gripping and outer-gripping chuck jaws. When all fourcorners of the insert are ?orn out, a new insert can readily be installed without removing the jaw from the chuck. No additional alignment is needed due to the accuracy of the positioning of the insert in the jaw.
