ABSTRACT An electrolyzer for the production of magnesium incorporates a new type of cathode unit comprising a main cathode and at least two trans- verse cathodes projecting at right angles from the main cathode. The transverse cathodes may project symmetrically from both sides of the main cathode or asymmetrically from only one side. The cathodes are placed in alternate relation with anodes in an electrolysis zone in the electrolyzer with the transverse cathodes of each cathode unit being aligned with the corresponding transverse cathodes of the other cathode units. Preferably there are considerably more than two transverse cathodes so spaced along the main cathode with regard to the spacing between the main cathodes that square cathode boxes are formed. Each anode is divided into separate portions each located in a cathode box. Spaces are left between the aligned cathodes to accommodate expansion on heating.
