Abstract A process for converting residual oil comprising vacuum bottoms in the presence of a cracking catalyst of high surface area greater than 90 m 2/gm and comprising a thermally stable special crystalline zeolite identified as a ZSM type zeolite is described. More particularly, a catalytic conversion process for high boiling hydrocarbons particularly contributing to producing cycle oils and gasoline boiling range products is described concommitantly with obtaining reduced carbon deposition. The catalytic conversion operation is used in combination with a relatively high regeneration temperature operation of at least 1350 °F. A short contact time riser hydrocarbon conversion operation particularly contributing to reducing slurry a oil product in favor of lower boiling products is also described. In addition both hydrogen transfer reactions are promoted and the yield of high octane gasoline is enhanced.
