ABSTRACT An improved resilient flex pin is provided for use in captively retaining an excavating tooth point on an adapter nose and is drivable into aligned openings formed in the tooth point and adapter nose. The flex pin includes an elongated rigid locking member having an elongated lateral recess formed therein. An elongated rigid wedge member is intersecured to the locking member by means of a spaced series of elastomeric segments positioned in the recess, and is laterally movable into the recess against the resilient resistance of the elastomeric segments. The wedge member has a longitudinally intermediate portion which is enga- geable by a forward side surface of the adapter nose opening and is interlockable therewith, and a pair of rearwardly swept outer end portions which underlie opposite end sur- faces of the locking member recess and are engageable therewith as the flex pin is being driven into its installed position to prevent shearing of the elastomeric segments. When the wedge member is laterally driven into the locking member recess, by relative movement between the tooth point and adapter, a pair of stop projections formed on the rear recess side surface engage the longitudinally intermediate wedge member portion and stop the inward wedge member travel before the outer end portions thereof engage the rear side surface of the recess, thereby essentially eliminating rigid bending loads on the wedge member. The outer ends of the locking member are provided with guide notches adapted to receive an inner end portion of a drift member to prevent the drift member from slipping off the flex pin as it is being pounded out of its tooth and adapter nose openings. In a modified version thereof, the improved flex pin is pro- vided with a front side portion which is narrowed relative to the balance of the flex pin, and the complementarily con- figured tooth point openings are modified accordingly. This provides a "key" effect which prevents the flex pin from being inserted into either tooth point opening in an inad- vertently reversed front-to-rear orientation. An alternate embodiment of the improved flex pin is also provided in which the cross-section of the locking member may be of either a circular or elongated rectangular shape, with the recess being formed inwardly through a front side surface of the locking member. The maximum front-to-rear dimension of the wedge member is made somewhat shorter than the depth of the recess so that during lateral movement of the wedge member into the recess the forward side surface of the adapter nose opening is brought into engagement with the forward side surface of the locking member before the wedge member engages the rear recess side surface, thereby essen- tially eliminating rigid bending forces on the wedge member.
