Disclosed is a novel resin-bonded ceramic-carbon- metal composite useful for preparing shaped refractory articles, e.g., slide gate plates and nozzles. These articles exhibit improved oxidation resistance. The ceramic composite is prepared from a specially formulated mix comprising a refractory aggregate, a curable resin binder and an antioxidant formulation of a boron source and a combination of at least two metals or their alloys, selected from the group consisting of Al, Mg, Ca, Si, Fe, Sn, Zr, Zn and Ti.
