Disclosed is a resin based on a cycloaliphatic ketone and an aliphatic or aromatic aldehyde and is prepared using a phase transfer catalyst of the formula (A): (see formula I) (in which X is N or P; R1 is phenyl or benzyl; R2, R3 and R4 are each alkyl, phenyl or benzyl; and Y is an anion or OH). The resin features a very broad solubility and low intrinsic coloring (i.e., a Gardner color number of less than 4) and is useful as a compound in coating, ink, pigment paste, adhesive compositions or the like.
