ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Electrodes for use in electric resistance welding are disclosed. The electrode has a body of copper, beryllium, or other material having a relatively low electrical resistiv- ity and defining a tip surface for contact with a workpiece during welding. The tip surface is formed by a layer of a material such as titanium carbide having a relatively high electrical resistivity and a degree of high-temperature hard- ness and compressive strength selected to minimize electrode distortion and a degree of oxidation resistance selected to minimize adhesion between the layer and the workpiece during welding. This form of electrode has been found advantageous in terms of minimizing "pick-up" of workpiece material during welding, and distortion of the electrode.
