The present invention is directed to a novel converter for interposition between an AC power source and a DC load capable of maintaining a substantially unity power factor independent of the impedance of the load. According to the invention, the converter has rectifying circuit means to provide DC power to a DC power output circuit from an AC source, means for varying the impedance seen by the AC source in the DC output circuit, and means responsive to a shift in AC input current away from an in-phase relation with the voltage of the AC source under loading of the DC power output circuit for controlling said impedance varying means in a direction to return the AC current towards in-phase relation with the AC voltage. More particularly, according to the preferred form of the invention, the means for varying the impedance seen by the AC source in the DC output circuit includes a resonant circuit interposed between the rectifying circuit means and the DC output circuit and connected to deliver DC power thereto. The converter includes a control circuit responsive to the DC voltage of the DC output circuit and the phase between the AC voltage and AC current. The control converter also includes a variable impedance responsive to the resonant circuit current for controlling the phase angle between the resonant circuit current and voltage across the resonant circuit.

Cette invention concerne un nouveau convertisseur à interposer entre une source de courant alternatif et une charge à alimenter en courant continu et capable de maintenir un facteur de puissance sensiblement proche de l'unité, sans égard à l'impédance de la charge. Selon l'invention, le convertisseur comporte un circuit redresseur pour alimenter la charge c.c. en courant continu à partir d'une source c.a., un variateur d'impédance de la sortie c.c. vue de la source c.a. et un moyen capable de s'adapter à un déphasage de l'alimentation en c.a. par rapport à la tension de la source de courant alternatif sous l'effet du circuit de sortie en c.c. pour commander ledit variateur d'impédance dans le sens approprié pour remettre en phase le courant alternatif avec la tension alternative. Plus précisément, selon la variante privilégiée de la présente invention, le variateur d'impédance comprend un circuit résonnant interposé entre le circuit redresseur et la sortie c.c. et connecté pour alimenter celle-ci. Le convertisseur comprend un circuit de commande réagissant à la tension c.c. de sortie et à l'angle de phase entre le courant et la tension alternatifs. Le convertisseur de commande comprend également une impédance variable qui modifie l'angle de phase entre le courant du circuit résonnant et la tension aux bornes de celui-ci, en fonction des caractéristiques dudit courant.
