ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A respirator is described of the kind fitted with a filtering system so that surrounding atmosphere can be inhaled. The respirator has an outer face mask, an inner face mask spaced from the former, and an inhalation duct. This duct enables uncontaminated air to be inhaled by a wearer at a pressure lower than atmospheric pressure. There is also provided a non-return valve offering resistance to the passage of exhaled air, through which exhaled air may be exhausted from the inner mask to the atmosphere surrounding the outer mask at a super-atmospheric pressure. A pump operated by the respiratory cycle may function during exhalation by the pressure difference between the exhaled air and atmospheric pressure to draw uncontaminated air into a chamber. During inhal- ation the uncontaminated air is discharged from that chamber into the space between the inner and outer face masks. This maintains the uncontaminated air in that sp ce at a pressure higher than atmospheric. One preferred form of this respirator has the chamber in communication with the space enclosed between the masks through a secondary exit non-return valve. The latter valve prevents the flow of gas from said space to the chamber, the chamber being adapted to be connected upstream of the secondary exit non-return valve with a supply of uncontaminated air.
