6446-432 ABSTRACT A problem with communication terminal response systems in general is that, should a particular one of multiple terminals always return a connect request message before the others, all incoming calls would arrive at that particular terminal and, there- fore, a calling user would be incapable of communicating with a desired terminal even though it might repeat origination of a call a number of times. The system of the present invention causes a calling party number and attribute values of a call of the in- stant when a communication was unsuccessful to be stored in a terminal and, when a message which arrives thereafter is identical in content with the stored one, delays the return of a connect request message from the terminal to thereby allow another terminal to accept the call. The response system of the invention varies the period of time by which the return of a connect request message is delayed, every time the terminal receives a message, so that connect request messages from several terminals are prevented from conflicting, i.e., the connect request messages are received by a network at different times.
