This invention relates to a series of physical pest control devices, herein referred to as responsive guards, designed to effect an instinctive flight response in an approaching pest animal. Existing guards include scarecrows, plastic owls, owl-eyed balloons, sharp-spiked anti- bird materials, and electric fences. These existing guards neither sense nor respond to an approaching pest in that they are immobile. The invention, herein referred to as responsive guards, show improvements to existing guards. Consequently, the usefulness of guards is now expanded in new applications for control of other types of pests. The embodiment of this invention is the incorporation into a guard of a true sensor (not just a trigger) in turn connected to another device to produce a stimulus. An array of design models incorporate different guard images and stimuli to suit specific pests and applications. One responsive guard design incorporates a traditional scarecrow for protecting home gardens from squirrels. Here, this responsive scarecrow senses an approaching squirrel which consequently activates a built-in irrigation system. The pest instinctively takes flight from this sudden spray and life-like stimuli. Other design models include responsive guards in the form of raptors (birds of prey) that may respond in any number of ways (e.g., attacking crys, flapping wings, movement on a guide wire, glowing of eyes). Again, other guards may not have a form of any particular importance, but simply be a response for a particular circumstance. For example, a garbage pail responsive guard responds to approaching raccoons with a repellent spray. In another, pigeons take flight from a roosting site when a responsive guard projects owl-eye images.
