A handle assembly includes a handle having a grip and a shaft mounting to an escutcheon plate. A rectangular spindle extends out of the handle shaft and through the escutcheon plate. The handle shaft includes an axially aligned opening for receiving the square spindle and has a groove formed in the end for receiving the retainer clip. A first embodiment of the retainer clip includes an arcing profile with end portions extending transversely to the arcing profile and cross member extending between the end portions. A second embodiment includes arms having an opening therebetween and a top keeper portion spaced apart from the arms. When slid into position onto the groove in handle shaft, the cross member engages the spindle and retains the escutcheon plate onto the handle. The spindle prevents the retainer clip from disengaging the handle shaft.
