An improved retainer for surgical sutures is provided which includes a suture retaining compartment comprising a suture winding panel with the panel having a pair of holding panels foldably connected to longitudinal edges of the suture winding panel. The holding panels are foldably connected to the winding panel by at least three gussets formed at the edges of the suture winding panel. The gussets at the ends of the foldable connection prevent frictional compression of the wound suture at the corners of the retaining compartment, and the central gussets or gussets engender a convex curvature to the holding panels, thereby creating a low friction volumetric compartment which retains the suture in place. The suture retainer also includes a needle holding means mounted at the intended location of the needle. In illustrated embodiments of the present invention the holding means is angularly disposed with respect to the longitudinal dimension of the retainer to afford ease of needle withdrawal, and in some embodiments the holding means is located on a foldable needle park panel. In some embodiments the retainer includes an insert against which the suture is wound. This insert provides several features, including preventing snagging of the suture on the needle holding means during suture withdrawal, and protection of the needle point. The insert may also include a flap to prevent the suture from snagging on a corner of the insert during withdrawal.

Il s'agit d'un bloc de rétention pour sutures chirurgicales comprenant un compartiment où les sutures s'enroulent autour d'un plaque fixée à ses deux extrémités par des supports. Ceux-ci retiennent la plaque au moyen d'au moins trois goussets situés aux extrémités de celle-ci. Ces goussets permettent d'éviter que les sutures subissent une compression par friction aux coins du compartiment de rétention, tandis que le gousset central (ou les goussets centraux) mène à une courbure convexe des supports, de façon à produire un compartiment de rétention des sutures dont la friction soit faible. Le dispositif compte en plus un support pour l'aiguille situé à l'emplacement prévu pour celle-ci. Dans les diagrammes représentant la présente invention, ce support forme un angle par rapport à la longueur du compartiment afin de pouvoir prendre l'aiguille plus facilement; dans d'autres réalisations, ce support se situe sur un panneau repliable de rangement des aiguilles. Dans d'autres réalisations, le compartiment compte en plus une pièce sur laquelle la suture s'enroule, permettant entre autres d'éviter que la suture n'accroche le support pour aiguille lors de la préhension de la suture, et protégeant également la pointe de l'aiguille. Cette pièce peut comporter un rabat afin d'empêcher que la suture n'accroche un coin de la pièce lors de la préhension.
