In a retaining wall built from blocks, geogrid connectors and geogrid sheets, when the backfill or otherwise retained earth is subjected to ground heave or shrinkage, or to other sorts of ground movement, the pressure against the rear face of the retaining wall inevitably increases. At least a component of this pressure or force will be in the horizontal direction relative to the wall and in turn this will cause one or more of the sheets of geogrid material to exert an opposing horizontal force on the geogrid connector. By means of the invention, however, the blocks and geogrid connectors of the retaining wall system are adapted to co-operate with each other in use at least partially to translate the horizontal force acting on the connector into a downward force acting on the blocks. The stability of the retaining wall is therefore enhanced when the wall is subjected to abnormal pressure.
