Abstract The invention is an overrunning tooth type clutch which is retarder controlled. The clutch engages or disengages with slight relative rotational movement of the connected shafts. The retarder is a wrap- around spring fastened to one shaft and dragging on the other. Relative shaft rotation in one direction causes the spring drag to engage the clutch teeth for positive drive. Opposite relative rotation causes the clutch teeth to separated for overrunning or slip purposes.
