Retention bolsters (50) for a percutaneous catheter (28) are disclosed which have a convexly curved exterior surface (58) which contacts the epidermal surface (40) of a patient, and which also provide protection against the catheter (28) from kinking. The retention bolsters (50) slide over a catheter (28) until contacting the skin of the patient at the catheter exit site (36). When secured in place, the bolsters (50) rock along contacting portions between a convexly curved surface (58) and the epidermal surface (40) of the patient in response to movement of the catheter (28) about the exit site (36), thereby alleviating the added pressure that would otherwise be applied by this movement. Upon the release of lateral pressure against the catheter device (28), the bolsters (50) return to their original upright position.
