The present invention relates to the preparation of gas mixtures, in particular, breathing gases for ventilated patients. The preparation according to the invention relates in particular to the use of selective gas separation membranes for the retention of noble gases in the exhaled air of ventilated patients, with the gas separation membrane integrated in a breathing device as an actively effective separation device. The membrane selectively retains the noble gases in order to separate the noble gases to be retained from the remainder of the expiration gases. It thereby becomes possible to make available a ventilation device that makes possible the use of noble gases, xenon in particular, as an anesthetic that is particularly simple and that incurs the least possible waste during use.
