330-206D ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for unloading layers of containers from a retort crate onto a conveyor assembly. The retort crate is mounted on a movable carriage and has a movable bottom and an open top bounded by a top edge. The con- veyor assembly includes a dead plate at one end having an inner edge adjacent the one end and an outer edge oppo- site the inner edge. The apparatus can horizontally position the top edge of the retort crate adjacent the outer edge of the dead plate. The bottom of the crate and a layer of containers can be raised. The apparatus senses when the uppermost layer of containers is in an unload position, that is with the bottom edges of the containers in the uppermost layer generally level with the outer edge of the dead plate. The bottom is stopped in its upward travel in response to the sensing of the uppermost layer at the unload position. The uppermost layer of containers is swept from the retort crate onto the conveyor assembly. The apparatus can function as an unloading or loading apparatus and is semi-automatic in operation.
