ABSTRACT A technique is provided for raising the heating value of the off gas product of a retort in which oil shale is being retorted. Such a retort containing oil shale particles is ignited and air is passed through it for combustion with carbonaceous material in the oil shale to provide heat for retorting the oil shale. Typically the off gas withdrawn from the retort may have a heating value of about 20 to 25 BTU/SCF (180-220cal/litre). In the process of the invention a small amount of water is introduced into the retort so that the water gas reaction occurs on contact with carbonaceous material in hot shale. Heating value of the resultant off gas can increase to ?? BTU/SCF (???cal/litre) or more, due to the added hydrogen and carbon monoxide products of the water gas reaction. - 1 -
