An automatically retracting chalk line dispenser including a casing (10, 12), a spool (14) having string (62) disposed within the casing (10, 12). A centrifugal speed regulator assembly (23) having speed regulator arms (35a, 35b), each with a primary end (81) and a secondary end (83). A support mechanism (30) supports the arms (35a, 35b) and supports a spring (24) for retracting the string (62). An arbor (36) is fixedly attached to the casing (10, 12). The primary end (81) of the regulator arm (35a, 35b) is adjacent to the arbor (36). When the spool is rotating at low speeds, the primary end (81) of the regulator arm (35a, 35b) does not contact the arbor (36), and at a predetermined speed the secondary end (83) centrifugally extends and the primary end (81) contacts the arbor (36). A spool control actuator (46) is provided for controlling the spool.
