A retractable stage for use such as a school stage in an auditorium and the like is normally stored in an upright, retracted position against an end-wall of the auditorium, and when deployed, is lowered such that the bottom that forms the front of the stage advances outwardly into the room, while the top is lowered vertically down the wall, to its operative position, to form the back of the stage. A retaining safety device attached to the stage incorporates a brake such that, in the event the stage "runs away", at any point of its deployment/retraction cycle, the movement of the stage is limited to a predetermined maximum displacement, and is then automatically braked to a fast stop.
