a retractable tape measure with means for position retention includes a tape casing having an exterior surface and an interior cavity. An opening extends through the exterior surface of the casing to the interior cavity. A tape is retractable mounted within the interior cavity of the casing. The tape has a free end and a fixed end. The fixed end is secured within the interior cavity of the casing. The free end extends from the casing through the opening. The tape has a top surface and a bottom surface. The top surface has measurement indicia. The tape when substantially withdrawn from the casing has a longitudinal axis. A retention member support is mounted at the free end of the tape. A free end retention member is mounted to the retention member support in an orientation to provide a retention force along the longitudinal axis thereby retaining the free end of the tape to a vertical member.
